☔ Cyclonic Storm Ditwah
Cyclonic storms have been a recurring issue in Sri Lanka, causing widespread
destruction and loss of life. One of the most recent example is Cyclone Ditwah which made landfall
on November 28, 2025 affecting over 1.4 million people across all 25 districts .The cyclone resulted
in 410 confirmed deaths , 336 people missing and nearly 233 000 displaced. The central and south
central districts including Kandy , Badulla , Nuwara Eliya , Kurunegala and Matale were the
hardest hit with landslides and flooding causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure .
The effects of cyclonic storms are far reaching with damage to infrastructure,
agriculture and livelihoods. The estimated from Cyclone Ditwah is around $4.1 billion , equivalent
to about 4% of Sri Lanka's GDP . The world Health Organization (WHO) has warned of increased
health risks ,including water borne diseases due to contaminated water sources .
Cyclonic storms have resulted in significant loos of life and displacement of people,
particularly in vulnerable communities. Also damage to roads , bridges and buildings has disrupted
essential services and economici activities . Cyclonic storms have damaged crops , affecting food
security and rural livelihoods .
To mitigate the effects of cyclonic storms Sri Lanka needs to invest in disaster
preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
